Apache and Navajo counties in Arizona boast the world's largest Ponderosa pine forest, contrary to the perception of the state as a vast, barren desert.
Established in the late 1800s, Apache County originated when Major Green selected a site for a military post, praising its beauty and fertile soil. In 1895, Navajo County was carved out of Apache County along with parts of other counties. Both counties, covering the northeast corner of Arizona, remain largely rural with a combined population of around 70,000.
St. Johns serves as Apache County's county seat, while Holbrook holds that role for Navajo County. Early settlers envisioned success in agriculture, cattle, and sheep farming, utilizing the vast mesas and fertile valleys.
Nearly two-thirds of Navajo County is comprised of Indian reservation land, with tourism, coal mining, manufacturing, timber production, and ranching being the primary industries. Fort Apache, established in 1870 and later converted into the Theodore Roosevelt Indian Boarding School, holds historical significance as a National Historic Landmark and now serves as a middle school for Indian children.
